What the calculator adjusts for
The estimate above moves with four inputs: the service type you pick, whether you add a premium urn, whether you add a viewing, and your ZIP code. Everything else, permits, transport, and the base cremation fee, is already folded into the baseline range for each service type. Enter your ZIP for a closer figure, then get a written quote before you decide anything.

Cremation FAQs without the fluff
How does this calculator estimate my cremation cost?
It starts from a national baseline for the service type you pick, direct, with memorial, or full service, multiplies in your urn and viewing choices, then nudges the range using typical cost differences for your ZIP code. It is a planning estimate, not a quote from any funeral home.
Why does my ZIP code change the estimate?
Funeral home overhead, especially rent and staffing, varies a lot by metro area. Large coastal cities such as New York and San Francisco typically run well above the national baseline, while many rural counties run below it.
Is the estimate the same as what a funeral home will quote me?
No. Treat the number as a starting point for comparing providers, then ask each one for a written, itemized price list, which funeral homes must give you on request under the FTC Funeral Rule.
What is included in the "basic container" option?
A basic container is a simple, unfinished cremation container that most states allow for direct cremation. It is not a casket, and no provider can legally require you to buy one.
Does Social Security help cover the cost?
A little. Eligible survivors can apply for a one-time payment, though it is far smaller than most cremation bills; our guide covers who qualifies and how to apply.
Can I use this calculator for more than one service at a time?
Yes. The "number of services" field multiplies the whole estimate, which is useful if you are pricing cremation for more than one family member at once.
How much do cremated remains actually weigh?
Usually three to nine pounds, regardless of how much the person weighed in life, because what remains afterward is processed bone fragment, not soft tissue, and bone mass varies far less than body weight does.
